Cork County Council has hosted eight compost awareness & food waste prevention events in 2015 in several towns and villages.
There is an established need to provide high quality environmental information for the public. By focusing on food & organic waste for a definitive period as done in Cork i.e. over one month, affords a good opportunity for interested holders & communities to engage in a behavioural change programmes in households. With one third of all food purchased thrown away, environmental education is a key driver to change.
Utilising Tidy Towns (TT) to develop Sustainability guides is also a novel approach to behavioural change. TT groups are so active at community level and always looking for new ideas & projects to include in their annual TT application particularly in the area of resource efficiency.
The Compost Awareness & Food Waste prevention events were held between May & June 2015 in the following locations:
- Blackwater Garden Centre in Youghal
- Youghal Links Co-op
- Secret Garden, Newmarket
- Fota House & Garden X 3 events
- Midleton Community Garden
- Cobh allotments
- Bandon GIY Group
- Timoleague Community Gardens
All events were advertised in the local media using both print & radio.
