The National Waste Prevention Programme

Preventing Waste, Driving the Circular Economy

Along with the Local Authority Prevention Network, the EPA runs several other initiatives under the National Waste Prevention Programme. These initiatives include:

The EPA is leading a programme to support businesses in the food supply chain to reduce food waste, encouraging food waste prevention in line with the principles of the food waste hierarchy. Participating businesses sign the Food waste Charter for Ireland.

Greenbusiness.ie hosts a Tool for Resource Efficiency or known as the ‘Green Business TREE’. This online tools allows businesses to carry out an overview self-assessment with tailored feedback on actions that would make their operations more resource efficient.

Stop Food Waste works with householders, communities, schools, local authorities (through LAPN), Tidy Towns groups, and businesses providing comprehensive information about the food we waste and how to it can be prevented.

GreenYourFestival is a spin-off of the LAPN whereby local authorities support events, festivals and locations to become more environmentally friendly. 

Repairmystuff.ie is Ireland’s leading online repair directory. Set up though the LAPN and led by Monaghan County Council, this site aims to is to support, promote and encourage a repair industry in Ireland.

Community Resources Network Ireland is the all-Ireland representative body for community-based reuse, recycling and waste prevention organisations. The CRNI’s vision is for an Ireland where the word ‘waste’ doesn’t exist and where our entire community benefits from the social, environmental and economic value of all reusable resources.

The Rediscovery Centre is the National Centre for the Circular Economy in Ireland. A creative movement connecting people, ideas and resources to support greener low-carbon living. The Centre is a strategic partner of the EPA.

The Conscious Cup Campaign is an initiative founded by a group of concerned individuals hoping to increase the use of reusable cups, by encouraging cafes and other outlets to incentivise this through discounts and loyalty schemes. The campaign promotes such businesses through the cafe map.

Refill Ireland is an environmental project aiming to make Irish towns and cities tap water refill friendly for everyone while on the go. Refill supports and promotes existing water filling locations and encourages the creation of further water access points. Refill maintains a Tap Map showing water points and participating businesses all over Ireland.

Other Irish Resource Efficiency Initiatives

My Waste is Ireland’s official guide to managing waste responsibly and efficiently. It provides info on local waste services; bring banks, recycling facilities along with ways to help you prevent waste, reuse and upcycle. My Waste is run by the Regional Waste Management Offices on behalf of the Department of Climate Action, Communications and the Environment.
