Supporting free public drinking water

Prevention for Local Authorities

Local authorities have had a variety of LAPN projects over the last few years supporting access to free public drinking water. To help local authorities and communities across Ireland to continue this water refill movement, a guide has been prepared under LAPN involving a number of the local authorities involved, outlining what can be done and how to approach it. The overall aim is to help reduce the use of single use water bottles.

Projects have ranged from initiatives encouraging local businesses to sign up to the ‘tap map’ on refill.ie to installing new public drinking water fonts in handy, outdoor locations like parks and greenways. Work has also included installing fonts in schools and public buildings along with programmes to help encourage their use. Events have even been tackled with mobile hydration units being funded.
