Repair & Reuse of Musical Instruments

Prevention for Community Groups

Monaghan County Council has set up a campaign offering free collection of unwanted musical instruments. Collected instruments are assessed and where possible repaired, cleaned and made available to community groups.

It was found that the best way to source instruments was to partner with local music shops and local repair businesses. A local person was retained to carry out repairs needed. The council partnered with Music Generation Cavan/Monaghan that supports music teaching in schools in both counties. Some instruments were also given to local music clubs where people were doing lessons but couldn’t afford the instruments.

A case study on this work, and a similar pilot that took place in Fingal County Council is here.
