Installation of Public Water Drinking Fonts

Prevention for Local Authorities

South Dublin County Council has installed public water drinking fonts in a number of locations, concentrating on places where people typically require regular rehydration, but do not readily have access to fresh water, such as parks, playgrounds and playing pitches. These places typically see the public bring single use plastic bottles as a means of hydration.

The fonts have counters to record usage. The work also included surveys of the park run group events to gauge existing plastic bottle reuse levels, as well as engagement with local sports clubs. The aim is to help reduce single use plastic bottle consumption in the community, contribute to climate action, and to improve the quality of, and access to, drinking water for everyone in the public realm.
