Food Waste

In Ireland, there is over one million tonnes of food waste disposed of each year. Find out what you can do to help put an end to this environmental disaster.

Food Waste at Home

Approximately 1/3 of all food produced for human consumption is wasted. A lot of this waste occurs in our homes. All though it may not seem like a lot, the average Irish household throws away €700 worth of food every year. This waste has a cost on our environment too.

Through the LAPN, and in partnership with Stop Food Waste, local authorities are working hard to help Irish householders reduce their food waste.

Food Waste in Business

Food waste can be a significant cost to businesses.

Time and money go into ordering, delivering, storing, preparing and serving food that ends up in the bin.

Most businesses just think about the disposal costs but this actually represent only a small fraction of the “true” cost of food waste.

It has been estimated that each tonne of food waste can cost approximately €2,000 – €5,000.

The solution to this waste of money for any business is to prevent food waste. To do this a business must first identify where and why food is being wasted, and then use this information to come up with specific solutions to prevent food waste being generated in the first place.
