Cavan promotes food waste prevention

Cavan County Council has been promoting food waste prevention to householders and consumers.

Over 35,000 people attended the Taste of Cavan event in August 2015 and visitors got an opportunity to view Cavan Council’s food waste prevention stand and learn more about the costs of food waste . This was supported by the Clean Technology Centre in Cork and the Irish Peatlands Council

Cavan County Council also had a waste prevention stand at the Virginia Agricultural show. This further heightened awareness of the issue of food waste among the public and local community.

Two members of staff attended training in respect of food waste prevention in Dublin which was organised by the LAPN. This learning from this training will be transferred into future Cavan LAPN projects.

Leaflets highlighting public awareness of food waste were also produced and distributed in the county.

The Environmental Awareness Officer also met with coordinators of Schools engaged in the Water theme on the Green School Programme. The focus of this element of the project was to promote waste prevention in the area of use of plastic water bottles. In the school that participated in the project, the use of plastic bottles by pupils decreased by 20%.
