Mayo County Council (in cooperation with Longford County Council) carried out A Resource Efficiency Project with GAA Clubs in the county, assessing where waste prevention could be implemented in their facilities, grounds etc. Presentation on this initiative here.

Mayo County Council initiated a Christmas Decoration Competition for Primary School Children. Light switches, old plastic bottles, old CDs, egg shells, bottle top and corks were just a few of the materials used to make the Christmas decorations and prizes were awarded to the best examples. More on this here.

Westport_Festival_Logo-border-580The Environment Department of Mayo County Council was also active in the Greening of Westport Festival of Music and Food, 2013.  A new waste segregation bin system was put in place with facilities for festival goers to separate food waste and recyclable items from normal landfill waste. Many volunteers were put in place to green the festival and raise awareness and a special children’s workshop was held to make puppets out of ‘waste’ materials. More information here.
